Historian’s case for Tuhoe independence

Posted by karere under Maori News

Once, not such a long time ago, in colonial New Zealand, Tuhoe were permitted to rule themselves within the boundaries of what was left of their land. It was the late 1800s and they were the only tribe to gain legal autonomy from the Pakeha Government. For a short while. Then it was taken away. The desire for autonomy never dulled though, nor was ceded by the Urewera mountain people; and today it is on the table again with John Key’s Government, as part of a singular constitutional claim. In a powerful new book on Tuhoe, eminent New Zealand historian Dame Judith Binney argues for that autonomy to be restored. The time has long come, Binney told the Weekend Herald. She believes there is nothing to be feared from a separate Tuhoe nation operating within New Zealand and that the tribe has a strong case. Such precedents exist around the world, she says, from Scotland and Ireland to Catalonia, which has been restored as an autonomous area within Spain, and the large Inuit state of Nunavut in Canada. Her book makes plain that Tuhoe never wavered in their efforts to retain self-governance, from the moment colonists first began taking their…

Hone solution pending says Maori Party

Posted by karere under Maori News

The Maori Party is optimistic it will find a mutually acceptable solution to the issues surrounding MP Hone Harawira and his party colleagues. A hui held in Whangarei over the weekend set up a dispute resolution process which the MP and the party will work through during the week. The party’s co-leaders were not at the hui. Pita Sharples was at another meeting and Tariana Turia is still recovering from gastric by-pass surgery. Party President Whatarangi Winiata believes a fair, just and final resolution that restores mana to everyone will be reached and says more announcements will be made later this week. He says the kaumatua of Te Tai Tokerau have made it clear they want Mr Harawira to stay…

Tapu Misa: Goff treading unwarily in race minefield

Posted by karere under Maori News

Labour leader taking route fraught with risk over repeal of foreshore and seabed legislation. THERE’S nothing quite like race to inflame emotions and generate heated comment (except, perhaps, for that other “r” word, religion), as I’m reminded every time I write on the subject. My column on Hone Harawira’s incendiary email a couple of weeks ago brought a record number of emails - and although the vast majority of them were positive, they showed how little insight many of us have into our own prejudices and in-built biases.

Emissions scheme trade-offs deliver little

Posted by karere under Maori News

Labour leader Phil Goff says the supposed concessions the Maori Party gained for its support of National’s emissions trading scheme are far outweighed by the long-term cost of the scheme to Maori families. The Maori Party is trumpeting a cut in the amount fuel was supposed to rise and the potential involvement of iwi in afforestation schemes as proof of its effectiveness. But Mr Goff says Treasury figures show changes voted through under urgency last week will cost $110 billion more than the Labour scheme it replaced. “What the National Party is saying, we’ll put a slight discount on power prices and petrol prices for the next two an a half years. What they’re not saying is what everybody else…

Hui hands Hone Harawira decision to caucus

Posted by karere under Maori News

A decision on Maori Party MP Hone Harawira’s fate has been put off until Tuesday but it looks increasingly likely he will return to the fold. That will go against public sentiment with a new poll out today showing most New Zealanders think Mr Harawira made racist comments for which he should leave Parliament. A two-day hui at Whangarei to discuss the controversial MP’s future role ended this afternoon with a decision to refer the dispute to the Maori Party caucus meeting in Wellington on Tuesday. The decision of caucus will be final, said party president Whatarangi Winiata, who emerged from today’s meeting side-by-side with a smiling Mr Harawira. Mr Harawira’s future with the party has been in question, following…

Aussie Idol Stan’s mum tells of abuse

Posted by karere under Maori News

Stan Walker brought the audience to tears with his emotionally-charged version of Amazing Grace, on his way to winning Australian Idol. Just like the lyrics from the song, “I once was lost but now am found,” Stan endured domestic violence, heartache and betrayal before finding salvation through God and music. The New Zealand-raised teen’s parents have revealed how their household was like a scene from the movie Once Were Warriors before they embraced Christianity when Stan was a child.

Maori vs Pakeha – Goff’s warning

Posted by karere under Maori News

Labour leader Phil Goff has re-opened the political warfare over the foreshore and seabed law, saying the Government’s plan to repeal it will divide the country again. Mr Goff yesterday changed Labour’s position on the law, saying it was working well the way it was now, and repeal would make “wounds fester”. National and the Maori Party have indicated they will repeal the law after reviewing it as part of their governing agreement. Mr Goff’s reversal means Labour has effectively withdrawn the offer it made this year to work with the two parties to achieve an “enduring consensus” on the law it created while in Government.

Should Tuhoe become their own nation?

Posted by karere under Maori News

This question was asked on the NZ Herald website 2 years ago following the state raids into Tuhoe terroritory, however the discussion continues. Access to the northern part of Te Urewera National Park is being closed for summer by members of a Tuhoe hapu, but local Maori say it has nothing to do with this month’s police raids.

Deals threaten to reopen racial wounds: Goff

Posted by karere under Maori News

Labour leader Phil Goff will today give a major speech on the theme of nationhood, accusing National and the Maori Party of “shabby” political deals which threaten to re-open racial wounds which until now had been healing satisfactorily. He is expected to lambast PM John Key for failing to provide leadership and instead leaving the country at a crossroads where it either celebrated its rich heritage and moved forward or ended up with society being divided for generations to come. His speech to a Grey Power-organised public meeting in Palmerston North is the latest of positioning statements from the Leader of the Opposition. They are designed to flag the direction Mr Goff is taking Labour, while putting some clear markers…

Singer Tina Cross’ ‘most precious possession’ stolen

Posted by karere under Maori News

Pop singer Tina Cross today spoke of her distress at losing her most precious possession, a whalebone tiki, in a smash-and-grab robbery in Auckland last night. The tiki, which once belonged to her late father, was in her handbag, which was taken from her car while she was rehearsing at Western Springs for this year’s Christmas in the Park concert. A window of the vehicle was smashed to gain access. “I am extremely upset to have lost this family taonga,” Cross said, adding that she and her husband were prepared to pay a “substantial reward” for its return. Cross initially thought she had lost just replaceable items, like her mobile phone, wallet, cash, credit cards and make-up, and she reported…

Comments about the Maori Flag

Posted by karere under Maori News

Do you support flying a Maori flag above the Harbour Bridge on Waitangi Day? The last surviving member of the trio who designed the tino rangatiratanga flag was flying high yesterday after finding out it will appear on the Auckland Harbour Bridge from next year. In 2007, activist group Te Ata Tino Toa asked Transit to fly it on Waitangi Day, but the agency declined. Public campaigning has kept the issue alive since then and this year Prime Minister John Key asked the Maori Party to consult widely on….
