Coalition’s fear, scare, smear campaign
Posted by karere under Maori News
On February 17 the Coastal Coalition ran an advert on page 18 of the Taranaki Daily News exhorting New Zealanders to oppose the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Bill. This Bill is the latest incarnation of the much-loved foreshore and seabed legislation. The coalition advert used a photo-shopped image of Prime Minister John Key in a korowai (Maori cloak) and waving a tino rangatiratanga flag and accused him of trading thousands of kilometres of coastline for Maori Party votes. This advert was one of the most magnificent examples of racist scaremongering and outright misinformation I’ve had the displeasure of reading since the the original Foreshore and Seabed Act was first hysterically (and incorrectly) played out in the media. The…

Tuhoe joins calls to help whanau in Christchurch
Posted by karere under Maori News
Ngai Tuhoe and the Tuhoe Establishment Trust is stepping up to assist those hit by the massive 6.3 earthquake which struck near Christchurch on February 22. There are 195 registered Tuhoe living in the Christchurch area. TPK has established a communications base to relay information to iwi and Maori organisation. This will help greatly in getting in touch with whanau as they enter into the welfare centres. We need people to know that registering with the welfare centres and/or red cross will unlock services and benefits there…

Maori observe gardens protest
Posted by karere under Maori News
Whanganui Maori will be at Pakaitore/Moutoa Gardens today to celebrate their own ways - and the stand they made during the 1995 occupation of the gardens. The celebration is for the iwi itself, but anyone else is welcome to come along. “It’s us entertaining ourselves and being happy to be with ourselves,” Mariana Waitai said. It’s 16 years since the iwi moved onto the gardens for the 79-day occupation, and the annual commemorations have formed their own pattern. They always begin with karakia (prayers) at dawn by the riverside, then breakfast, tidying the gardens, the arrival of children from kura and kohanga reo (Maori language schools and preschools), a powhiri (welcome ceremony) for visitors and then a day of talk…

One word holds key to shape land claims
Posted by karere under Maori News
The meaning of a single word could shape the findings of a landmark inquiry into what Ngapuhi chiefs agreed to when they signed the Treaty of Waitangi more than 170 years ago. On Thursday Crown and claimant lawyers summed up their arguments in stage one of Te Paparahi o Te Raki (the Northland Inquiry) at Moerewa’s Otiria Marae, wrapping up five weeks and thousands of pages of evidence. Stage one is examining what the chiefs and the Crown believed they were agreeing to, first in the 1835 Declaration of Independence, then in the Treaty five years later. The Tribunal’s findings will set the groundwork for hundreds of land claims in stage two, and if the judges side with Ngapuhi, who…

New perspective on Maori seats
Posted by karere under Maori News
In a recent statement, Hone Harawira declared that the decision of his colleagues to suspend him from their caucus was, among other things, “clearly aimed at silencing the only voice within the party that has offered any genuine and constructive criticism of the Maori Party’s relationship with the National Government during a time when food, power and petrol price rises, coupled with an increase in GST, are devastating Maori communities the length and breadth of Aotearoa”. Mr Harawira now has the opportunity and, some would say, the duty to become the public voice of those he considers are suffering from “the economic and social disparities”. He will do so, at least initially, as a lone voice, and like most lone…

Kohanga kai – ‘not just for Maori’
Posted by karere under Maori News
Amorangi Hobson has remained stoic for her children’s sake. But, as she recounts escaping her crumbling house with her baby and the panic of not knowing if her other two children were safe, the mask cracks and the tears come. “I don’t want to break, I’m conscious that I don’t want them [her children] to see that.” The family – Miss Hobson, her daughters, 18-month-old Krysharley-Shay Hobson-Roberts and Jazzahray Walker-Wharehinga, 7, and son Ezekiel Walker-Wharehinga, 5 – have lost everything…

Matt McCarten: Harawira expulsion may be Key’s undoing
Posted by karere under Maori News
The political story of the week - which would have got far more attention if it hadn’t been for the tragedy in Christchurch - was the parting of ways between Hone Harawira and the Maori Party. When people are dying on a massive scale, political manoeuvering, quite rightly, is shunted way down the news cycle. While superficially it’s a falling out of individual caucus members in the Maori Party, its ramifications could determine the outcome of the next election. An agreement was reached on Wednesday between the Maori Party and Harawira to avoid a messy legal and political scrap over his imminent expulsion. The essence of the deal was that Harawira resigned from the party and will form a new…

Maori feeling uncomfortable at Welfare Centeres urged to use marae
Posted by karere under Maori News
Reports are starting to filter in that Maori whanau seeking assistance at Welfare Centres in Christchurch are feeling uncomfortable when seeking support. Maori Party MP for Christchurch, Rahui Katene is urging all whanau who might feel this way to use marae in and around the city as places of refuge. Marae around the country have opened their doors (to all) and are offering supplies, accommodation and kai. Rahui Katene said in her press release the following: “This morning local Maori service providers mentioned in a hui that theywere getting feedback that some of our Maori whanau were feeling marginalised when they went to the welfare centres for help. “It was noted in the hui that many Maori families were being…

Maori MPs just pawns, says Hone
Posted by karere under Maori News
Maori politicians are being used as political pawns by mainstream parties, Hone Harawira has told a Native American news service. According to Indian Country Today Media, the former Maori Party MP, who is now an independent, said: “Maori people who hold office with white parties are basically ignored. They are trotted out to do a speech, and then kicked out of the room when the decisions are made.” When asked about the importance of dedicated indigenous seats in parliament, he added: “At that level it’s about learning the skills of macro management, rather than bullshitting yourself that you’re part of the government, because the white boys will kick you out.” The comments from the Tai Tokerau MP – who quit…

Harawira free to start anew after quitting Maori Party
Posted by karere under Maori News
Hone Harawira’s decision to quit the Maori Party and become an independent MP is a sensible outcome to an irreconcilable situation, Prime Minister John Key says. Mr Harawira’s announcement today followed a meeting of the party’s national council which was considering a disciplinary committee recommendation to expel him, and avoided further strife over his future. A compromise has been reached - Mr Harawira will stand as an independent in his Te Tai Tokerau electorate in the general election on November 26 and the Maori Party won’t put up a candidate against him…

Harawira quits Maori Party
Posted by karere under Maori News
BREAKING NEWS: Hone Harawira has quit the Maori Party and cut a deal to protect his hold on the Tai Tokerau seat at this year’s election. In a joint statement released after the Maori Party council finished its hearing today, Harawira and Maori Party president Pem Bird said neither wanted to see the party “destroyed by in-fighting”. “We have come to the point where it is agreed it would be best for myself [Harawira] and the Maori Party to part ways and focus on issues,” the statement said. Harawira would continue to serve as the Tai Tokerau MP and would stand at this year’s election as an independent MP or as a member of another party. The joint statement said…

Earliest Maori diet quite different
Posted by karere under Maori News
Maori living in southern New Zealand had few plant foods before the introduction of potatoes and other European foods, according to Prof Helen Leach, editor of From Kai to Kiwi Kitchen (Otago University Press 2010). Her studies of what southern Maori ate before the arrival of Cook led her to realise that people could survive well by hunting and gathering wild food, even if they could not grow a staple food like kumara…
