Teens find simple way to save lives

Posted by karere under Maori News

An article in our local newspaper, the Daily Post, has given me hope that young people may have found at least part of the answer to New Zealand’s dreadful rate of suicide among their number. It indicated that teenagers may be ready to take ownership of this desperate affliction and are setting about helping one another to seek help for the mental and emotional predicaments in which too many of our schoolkids find themselves. It is well known that New Zealand has the highest suicide rate among young people of any country in the world. The latest figures I could find for the 15-24 age group show that the rate in New Zealand is 27.6 suicides for each 100,000 people of…

Open for business

Posted by karere under Maori News

Maori entrepreneurs have punched above their weight in isolation for generations. Rowena Orejana reports on an Auckland venture combining resources to get ahead together. As far as giant leaps forward go, this one appears most unassuming at first glance. The glass-walled ground floor of the big grey building on Putney St in Manukau is the culmination of five years of planning. Inside, the reception and the formal lounge area gives way to several desks waiting for occupants. On some days this place is busy. But on this day it’s quiet. The Matatau Maori Business Centre is the first of its kind in New Zealand - a fully serviced centre for Maori business. “The aim of the business centre is to provide a…

Mana Wahine celebrates women in NZ

Posted by karere under Maori News

As part of Mana Wahine, Minister of Women’s Affairs Hekia Parata will host two events today to celebrate the contribution Maori women make to society and to the economy. A breakfast event this morning will focus on Maori women in business leadership, and tonight Ms Parata and Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia will co-host a function at Parliament focusing on priorities for women in New Zealand. Ms Parata says Maori women are making “a growing contribution” to the economy, and she wants to see more women in leadership roles. “We need to celebrate that contribution and inspire other young Maori women to use their entrepreneurial and leadership skills in all parts of the economy,” she says. Mana Wahine has been…

Celebrating Matariki with food

Posted by karere under Maori News

Charles Royal, well known Maori Chef, sees Matariki as “the time when the sap runs, and a good time to plant and transplant any plants that need to be attended to before the growing season”. A Feast is always part of it. But although Charles is passionate about food he feels that Matariki is more about people getting together than about what you put on the table. “I think any food goes with Matariki. To me it’s more about celebrating and sharing our past, remembering the ones that have passed before us and allowing that knowledge from our ancestors to be re-lived which could easily be lost with modern technology and convenience at the helm.” His plan for Matariki this…

Reduced margin for Hone

Posted by karere under Maori News

The narrow win by Hone Harawira in Te Tai Tokerau byelection at the weekend sets the scene for a very interesting general election says Dover Samuels, who lost his Maori electorate of Te Tai Tokerau to Hone Harawira in 2005. Mr Samuels says a feature of this year’s general election will be polarities in the fringe parties with Don Brash on the far right contrasting with the Tino Rangatiratanga brand. “Firstly congratulations must go to Hone, but if I had won by 800 votes from a previous majority of 6000 I would be concerned about the general election looming,” he said this week. “The people of Te Tai Tokerau have to ascertain whether putting Hone back will deliver the policies…

Poor vote gives Harawira victory

Posted by karere under Maori News

The disenfranchised, the poor and ultimately the north is what brought Hone Harawira home in Saturday’s Te Tai Tokerau by-election with a third of his majority coming from just four Far North towns. Mr Harawira won the Te Tai Tokerau by-election with 5611 votes, 867 ahead of Labour List MP Mr Davis, but well short of the 6308 vote majority he held at the 2008 general election. But an analysis of where the votes were cast shows that what won the vote was the strong support from Mr Harawira’s “heartland”- the poor and disenfranchised Maori in Northland. In Ahipara, Kaitaia, Kaikohe and Moerewa Mr Harawira got 954 votes, 294 more than Mr Davis and 33.9 per cent of the majority….

Judge’s decision lets Maori take back complex

Posted by karere under Maori News

Maori could repossess one of Auckland’s most troubled apartment complexes if new ground levies are not paid, according to a High Court judge. Justice Mark Woolford issued a decision on the strife-torn 230-unit Quay Park Grand Central Station in which he says owners defaulting on payments would give the Maori land owner entitlement to take possession of the entire property, he said…

Confused Pakeha turn up to vote

Posted by karere under Maori News

While some voters did not take the opportunity to have their say in the Tai Tokerau by-election on Saturday, others were being turned away at the door. Some Pakeha reportedly turned up at polling booths throughout Northland and West Auckland, having mistakenly thought it was the general election. Finding they were ineligible to vote on the Maori roll, they were told to “come back in November, you’ll have your turn then”, one Mana Party supporter said.

Maori Women’s Contribution To Aotearoa New Zealand Celebrated

Posted by karere under Maori News

The Minister of Women’s Affairs, Hekia Parata, will host two events tomorrow to celebrate the contribution Maori women make to the economy and to society. A breakfast event in Auckland tomorrow morning will focus on Maori women in business leadership. Along with the Minister, the guest speakers are inspiring business women Parekawhia McLean, the chief executive of Tainui and Hinerangi Raumati, a company director. “Maori women are making a growing contribution to building the kind of enterprising economy we need to build a better future for all New Zealanders,” Ms Parata says. “We need to celebrate that contribution and inspire other young Maori women to use their entrepreneurial and leadership skills in all parts of the economy.” Tomorrow night, Ms…

Tuhoe hope agreement will pave way for Te Urewera deal

Posted by karere under Maori News

Tuhoe hope a new Treaty settlement involving Te Urewera National Park can be worked out with the Crown by the end of next year as it prepares to sign a milestone agreement this weekend. More than a year after the Crown-Tuhoe settlement negotiations imploded, both parties are committing to a “relationship agreement” on Saturday at Ruatahuna. In May last year, Prime Minister John Key pulled the plug on a deal, which was languishing before the Cabinet, because of its provision to hand back the 212,672ha Te Urewera National Park to iwi. Return to iwi ownership was a Tuhoe bottom line. It is an important, albeit provisional, step on the path back to settlement because the relationship was in rocky shape…

Issue could rekindle Trotter’s activism

Posted by karere under Maori News

We regularly organise community events to raise funds and awareness for social causes we feel are worthwhile, including Women’s Refuge, Architecture for Humanity’s earthquake relief efforts in Christchurch and Sendai, and the SPCA Emergency Earthquake Fund. As Chris Trotter noted in his article “Activist’s mixup lacks integrity” (Perspective, June 7), we recently hosted an art exhibition to raise funds to support the 18 Urewera arrestees and their families through the drawn-out legal battle they have faced since 2007. The groundswell of public support from the community during and after the exhibition was overwhelmingly positive. Hundreds of people attended the event, and we raised more than $6000 for the defendants. Veteran human rights activist John Minto fronted the auction on the…

Crown-Tuhoe push towards Treaty settlement

Posted by karere under Maori News

More than a year after the Crown-Tuhoe settlement negotiations imploded both parties are committing to a “relationship agreement” this weekend. In May last year Prime Minister John Key pulled the plug on a deal - which was languishing before cabinet - because of its provision to hand back the 212,672ha Te Urewera National Park to the iwi. Return to iwi ownership had been a Tuhoe bottomline in negotiations. It is an important albeit provisional step on the path back to settlement because the relationship was in bad shape immediately following Mr Key’s announcement that the deal wouldn’t go ahead. Bad jokes were made by Mr Key - he said he would have been Tuhoe dinner if he’d been dining with…
