Tribe keen to pass on coal mining skills
Posted by karere under Maori News
Waikato Tainui sees a future for some of its people across the Tasman.
Executive Chair Tukuroirangi Morgan told the national hui of Whanau Ora providers in Auckland yesterday that he’s talking to Australian mining companies about their training needs.
He says the iwi, which has ambitions to buy into Solid Energy, is no stranger to coal mining.
“We think we can train a whole bunch of people not only to work in Waikato but to work in Western Australia. We can provide a training scheme for 200 to 300 people, so instead of mining our lands we will mine abroad,” Mr Morgan says.
He says 90 percent of Tainui’s 3000 beneficiaries who live in Perth are working in mines.
