Papakura Marae aims to win back Family Start contract

Posted by karere under Maori News

One of five Maori social service providers losing their Family Start contracts is choosing not to fight the decision in court - and will instead attempt to win back the business. The Ministry of Social Development is axing the agreements because, it says, standards designed to protect the most vulnerable children from abuse were not being met. One provider, the Waipareira Trust, is taking legal action against the termination. But another, Papakura Marae, says it’s reapplying for a contract. The marae’s chief executive, Tony Kake, says they knew they always had the legal option but he prefers talks over courts and they’ve tried instead to work with the ministry. Mr Kake says he agrees with the ministry that some of…

Row over women’s refuge funds

Posted by karere under Maori News

The Government has confirmed that the Palmerston North Maori women’s refuge is under investigation for financial mismanagement, following revelations in Parliament that it suffered a $109,000 loss last year. Associate Minister for Social Development Tariana Turia said the beleaguered Palmerston North Te Roopu Whakaruruhau o Nga Wahine, which had its funding frozen six months ago, had been mismanaged financially. “I have been assured by the department that we are not dealing with an issue of fraud, however there are issues of mismanagement that are being addressed by the organisation in co-operation with the department,” she said. “As soon as the ministry was made aware of these issues, funding was stopped.” An audit report tabled by NZ First leader Winston Peters…

Iwi rejects sacred site offer from Chinese firm

Posted by karere under Maori News

Chinese company Shanghai Pengxin has been accused of making a “Claytons” offer to return historical pa sites to a King Country iwi after knocking back its offer to buy the farms where the sites are located. Interests associated with King Country iwi Ngati Rereahu and central North Island iwi Tuwharetoa said yesterday that Shanghai Pengxin was seeking the “ridiculous” sum of $66.5 million for three properties out of the 16 former Crafar farms the Chinese company bought this year for a total believed to be just over $200 million. The iwi interests believe the three farms, which include areas of cultural significance, are worth about $45 million. Chris Kelly, the chief executive of Government-owned Landcorp, which will run the farms…

Greens call for apology from minister over refuge claims

Posted by karere under Maori News

Green Party co-leader Metiria Turei says Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia should apologise to women’s refuges for accusing them of not telling her the full story about a refuge in financial strife after a letter revealed Women’s Refuge had met with Mrs Turia about it in April. Mrs Turia claimed on Radio NZ she was not told of the full extent of the problems faced by the Te Roopu Whakaruruhau O Nga Whanau Maori in Palmerston North by her officials or Women’s Refuges. That refuge’s funding was frozen in December after an audit report raised serious concerns about financial management - a report which NZ First leader Winston Peters released this week. Mrs Turia said she was angry that she…

Tainui’s asset base grows to healthy $694m

Posted by karere under Maori News

One of the country’s most powerful tribes has pushed up earnings and profit, increasing its asset base by $36 million to $694 million in the past year. Tainui Group Holdings made $39.9 million net after-tax profit, up on 2011’s $23.1 million, and increased its dividend by $500,000 to $11 million while still reducing debt. The real estate-rich business, which released its annual report and result yesterday, forked out capital expenditure of $114.2 million the previous year but pushed that down to just$56.4 million in the year to March 31, 2012. Debt to total assets, standing at an extremely conservative 28.3 per cent the year before, fell to an even safer 26 per cent, the business announced, and the return on…

Snapshot of Maori statistics launched

Posted by karere under Maori News

A new one-stop-shop for statistics about Maori has been launched this afternoon on Statistics New Zealand’s website. The new section provides a snapshot of Maori in New Zealand and gives an insight into their well-being and development, government statistician Geoff Bascand said. Most of the information already existed on the site, but it was often difficult to access or understand. Now everything from agriculture to cultural identity can be found in one section (http://www.stats.govt.nz/maori) called Te Ao Marama 2012. There were versions in English and Maori and print copies could also be ordered. “Te Ao Marama 2012 touches on a range of data spanning economic, social, cultural, and environmental statistics,” Bascand said. “For example, in 1991, of all who identified…

Maori Council and Iwi Forum vie for Government ear The Maori Council have been rejuvenated with newly elected leaders put in place. However, they may well be in contention with the Iwi Leaders Forum. Maori Affairs Minister, Pita Sharples, says the government could seek advice from the Maori Council on some matters, while on others, the Iwi Leaders Forum. Calls for report on Urewera Raids police conduct Five years on from the raids in Ruatoki and there is still no report from the state agent established by the government. According to the Maori Party this is a miscarriage of justice. Maori MP for Te Waiariki, Te Ururoa Flavell, is calling for a report on police conduct during the Tuhoe Raids….

Turia unaware of refuge’s money problems

Posted by karere under Maori News

Associate Minister for Social Development Tariana Turia wants answers from her officials after she wasn’t told about financial problems facing a Palmerston North-based Women’s Refuge. New Zealand First leader Winston Peters yesterday slammed the Government for failing to do background checks before funding Te Roopu Whakaruruhau o Nga Wahine Maori Women’s Refuge. An independent audit found the refuge made a loss of $109,000 for the June 30, 2011 financial year. “Under a section labelled ‘Fraud’, the auditors said they had identified what they called ‘unauthorised transactions’ and recommended the introduction of controls for the ‘prevention and detection of fraud’,” Mr Peters said in a statement. He said the auditors also found issues with the payment of bonuses and other personal…

Crafar farm price ‘ridiculous’ say iwi

Posted by karere under Maori News

Chinese company Shanghai Pengxin has put a “ridiculously” high price on three recently purchased former Crafar dairy farms in the central North Island, the iwi groups seeking to purchase them for cultural reasons say. The Tiroa E and Te Hape B Trusts representing King Country iwi Ngati Rereahu were part of the Sir Michael Fay led group which competed against, but lost to Shanghai Pengxin in a bid to buy the 16 former Crafar dairy farms this year. However, the trusts have been in negotiations to buy two farms at Benneydale south of Te Kuiti, while Tuwharetoa representatives who were also part of the Fay group have been negotiating to buy a farm at Tauhara on the Napier Taupo highway….

Browse through them for an understanding of Māori well-being and development. ‘Te ao mārama’ is a Māori concept relating to wisdom and understanding. It derives from the myth in which Tāne separated his Sky Father Ranginui and Earth Mother Papatuānuku to create ‘te ao mārama’ or the world of light. This allowed Tāne and his brothers to grow and better understand the world around them. Statistics New Zealand has collected a substantial amount of information relating to Māori. For more details of the statistics, plus informative analysis of these data and other statistical information…

Iwi forum, Maori Council may ‘compete’ for Government ear

Posted by karere under Maori News

Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples is warning a rejuvenated Maori Council that it might be overlooked by the Government in favour of the Iwi Leaders Forum. The council has formed a new leadership team that includes Sir Eddie Durie, and is aiming to be the contestable advisor to the Government on all things Maori. But in recent times the Iwi Leaders Forum has become a stronger lobbying force in Wellington. Dr Sharples says although the Maori Council has a statutory role, ministers can be selective when it comes to taking advice. He says at the moment the council has to be recognised because it is a legislated body, but the Act that defines the organisation is under review. Dr Sharples…
