Crown urged to stop Rangitane settlement
Posted by karere under Maori News
Some members of Rangitane in the lower North Island want to put a stop to their tribe’s Treaty settlement.
The Crown is negotiating directly with an urban Maori authority in the rohe, Tanenuiarangi Manawatu Incorporated.
But a group called Ko Te Pou Marangatahi O Rangitane Ki Manawatu has formed, complaining that the true families of Rangitane are not represented in the process.
A member of the group, Ra Durie, says about 175 people are against the direct negotiations.
He says the settlement is being negotiated without the weight of traditional Rangitane families behind them.
Dr Durie says the problem has been created because the whole tribe is not on the same journey.
He says his group is not critical of Tanenuiarangi Manawatu Incorporated, which he says is run by good hard-working people who should be congratulated for establishing a claim with the Crown.

Ana, kite nga mahi o te kawanatanga nei? Ki te kawana, ka korero ana ratou, ki tetahi roopu Maori, ka uru te hapu katoa ki roto. Typical Government negotiations, when they speak to 1 interested party, the whole of the hapu, is included. That is how they get their mandate. 1 groups opinion, does not give them the right to speak on the behalf of the whole.
You are quite right Chrissy… this is what has happened right around the country, where the Government or rather the Crown has chosen one group to represent the interests of all groups within a particular rohe.
It’s the old divide and rule…
What happens is what you have described where other people get to represent your interests and you are left out altogether. This is what has happened up on the Coast north of Gisborne, where the Crown has chosen Ngati Porou to tahae the interests of Ruawaipu, Uepohatu and Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti iwi.
You gotta prepared to fight all the way…
