Govt contacts iwi along Waikato River about share sales
Posted by karere under Maori News
The Government has started contacting iwi directly affected by its plan to sell shares in Mighty River Power, which has hydro-dams along the Waikato River.
The Crown has delayed its proposal to sell up to 49% of shares in the state-owned company until next year, while it talks to Maori.
The Government refused to call a national hui - which was one of the recommendations recently released in an interim report by the Waitangi Tribunal on Maori water rights.
Instead, the Crown wants to talk to iwi close to the Waikato River.
One iwi affected is Ngati Koroki Kahukura which has tribal lands that also include Lake Karapiro.
Chief negotiator Willie Te Aho says the Government has made contact with his tribe.
He says all affected iwi along the Waikato River have been contacted by Government via email.
Mr Te Aho says the Crown has asked to meet so it can tell the tribes about its views on the Waitangi Tribunal interim report on water.
He says he’s asked the Government instead to meet with Ngati Koroki Kahukura on its land at Lake Karapiro.
He expects to meet with the Crown within three weeks, and in the meantime Ngati Koroki Kahukura representatives plan to go to a national hui called by the Maori King to can gauge national opinions before talking with Government.

Either or little from all this negotiation stuff and whether the outcome be shares or retention of the status quo little benefit will flow to the multitude of Maori around the country. Maori today in the main are alienated from their Iwi’s, Hapu’s etc and a large number remain homeless and trapped in lifestyle and unenviable situations not of their making and bereft of any real links to what constitutes Maoridom let alone their own close families. I well know from long and bitter experience how much angst and petty jealousy exist’s throughout the whole of Maoridom which in the main is selfish and rotten to the core though outwardly in the media show under all the pretense of civility another more presentable face is portrayed. When are you elitist nobodies who are leading the Maori Nation down the road to nowhere going to face up to these very real issues which are eating away at the heart and soul of a one great and mighty nation. I would strongly suggest some soul searching and a good bit of repentance from this self serving aggrandizement regime which is cajoling many to follow the selfish individualistic route of the Pakeha which I might add has brought this planet if any of you noticed to the brink of imminent destruction. How might I add are we Maori to cope under such a hostile and highly destructive conditions going forwards? By they way this Rapid Climate Change is not a dream as most Maori and especially naive away with the fairies elders like to delude themselves or some silly idea invented by the Pakeha to con us. No Siree this is real and hard core and when all factors are considered merely DEATH Getting WARNED UP. All the money, land or language in the world won’t count for squat when it rev’s up a few notches and we can be damn certain it will.
Kia tupato ! tautoko te Mana Atua
