Henare hits out at National
Posted by karere under Maori News
National backbencher Tau Henare has hit out at his own party over its stance on Maori issues.
In Parliament on Wednesday he said he was ”torn” over having to vote against legislation which would have allowed people to swear an oath to honour the Treaty of Waitangi.
Yesterday he said the Government had not done enough to reduce Maori unemployment levels after the Household Labour Force Survey revealed a worse than expected unemployment rate.
”I think anybody would be embarrassed about 15 per cent unemployment.”
The Government was doing what it could in tough times, he said.
But he said he considered crossing the floor - voting against his party - over a bill honouring the Treaty.
”Unfortunately the whipping system says that I cannot vote for his bill.”
Such actions did not create stable government, he said.
”This House of Representatives had an opportunity to say to the world, yes there are different cultures, yes there are people in our nation and we could have said to the world that if you wanted to, not we’re going to make you, but if you wanted to you could have sworn your allegiance on the Treaty of Waitangi.”
The bill should have at least gone to select committee, he said.
Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia said Henare’s comments showed the Government was not clear on its stance on the Treaty.
It was ”appalling” that National had not supported the oath bill.
”The option to take an oath; I cannot believe that anybody in the House would have voted against it.”
Prime Minister John Key said it was up to Henare whether he wanted to vote against the party.
“I can’t physically stop people.”
Henare had voiced his views to caucus, Key said.
”He had already said to me that he was opposed to the position that caucus took but respected the caucus view.”
National believed the bill could have implications that would be difficult to uphold.

Maybe this flat out reject by the Nats and those of the House will wake a few complacent Maori’s and Pakeha and foreigners up who reside in this Lala Land called NZ as to the brutal fact that Colonialism is alive and kicking along with their Armed British Constabulary enforcement unit now called the NZ Police. From what we see here their aggressive one sided 172 year long imposed institutionalised apartheid system will always be maintained by the obviously racially biased perpetrators and maintainers of this oppressive system against any semblance of ever honouring the tenets of the Treaty of Waitangi willingly of their on free will intent let alone honouring the Declaration of Independance as over a hundred countries do and always have since 1835. We see from this rebuke form the so called mighty whites this attitude consistently maintained from some 150 odd years of repetitious Maori bashing via media. This sub conscious programming of the masses has so deeply ingrained in the Pakehas Psyche a false belief that they the Pakeha as and ethnic group are somehow a superior species above and beyond the human condition of others who inhabit the planet and someone unique and better than them and care little for other not similar. Their individualist ideologies we see week after week are constantly reinforced by their foriegn owned biased media which I might add are controlled out of one of the most racist nations on earth to boy across the ditch the once upon a time whites only Aussies. Let us not forget a similar policy still applies here with regard to immigrants of which Maori as the original discoverers have little imput. Thus this put down of swearing allegiance to the tenets of the Treaty of Waitangi rather than the Queen or rather fake Sovereign of Britain was actually the second document signed by the Royal House of Sachen Leopold affirming Maori Sovereignty of these lands in 1835 and in 1840 again agreeing to the rule of the British over their own citizens the Settlers here and nothing more nothing less. One could waffle on for decades about it but facts are clear today as then, the pale guys not representative of the lawful sovereigns will not ever honour their partnership protocols and Maori can look forward to further marginalisation in their own lands unless powerful forces are brought to bear to change the paradigm. Yes time for a change.
