Te Rauparaha to be recognised as Ka Mate haka composer
Posted by karere under Maori News
Ngati Toa chief Te Rauparaha will be officially recognised today as the composer of the Ka Mate haka.
A major Treaty of Waitangi settlement is set to be signed off in Parliament this morning, worth more than $75 million to the Wellington iwi.
Ngati Toa chairman Taku Parai says there are a lot of other things that could have been introduced to the settlement, but the iwi is happy with the deal.
The iwi will be granted the right to buy many Crown-owned properties in Wellington, including a number of schools, Arohata and Rimutaka prisons, and the central police station.
