Unlocking value of Maori farmland essential – Finlayson
Posted by karere under Maori News
Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson says unlocking the value of under-utilised Maori farmland in the North Island is essential for the prosperity of both Maori and the economy.
Mr Finlayson told Federated Farmers national council in Wellington this week that an overhaul of Te Ture Whenua Maori (the Maori Land Act) is vital if Maori are to develop their land and realise its full potential.
He said 15% of the North Island, or thereabouts, is Maori land and 80% of it is under-developed.
The act has failed to make Maori land productive and he has appointed a team of Maori experts to investigate the issue and report back to the Government by the end of November.
Mr Finlayson said they are having a good look at Te Ture Whenua Maori so that ways can be found of making that land productive.
“I think that we’re going to have to have a wholesale review of that legislation, I’m very keen, I regard it as one of my top priorities to progress that because I just think it’s such a crying shame that so much of that land is under-developed,” he said.
Federated Farmers president Bruce Wills said if New Zealand can resolve the financial issues surrounding titles to Maori land, everyone will benefit.
He said it’s difficult to lend money against Maori land because of its multiple ownership.
But Mr Wills said a solution is needed because the land is valuable.

Same old same old stuff from government and this time by Finny’s new group. Bet nothing comes of it as per usual simply because like most Maori multiple owned land it will have a bunch of uncles cousins or brothers and sisters etcetera as do nothing talk big trustees who really hate each other’s guts or who are jealous or one another or trying push one trustee out for their innovative suggestions or just because some trustee can be annaly retentive for the sheer sake of it. Sounds familiar? I mean who are we all trying to kid when we all know the banks and funders in Kiwiland do not and never have provided loans for development upon multiple owned blocks and totally unlike the Swiss Banks who have been doing this co-op lending stuff for Kibutzes etc for centuries. Naturally Pakeha here who want the land will never tell Maori about such borrowing opportunities for land development being available outside of the Aussie Kiwi Banking and Financing Company closed loop regime. My suggestion is to start a non THC Hemp growing industry using the marginal land and the key reason being the dry whether during summer months which will be experienced more often from here on. There are hundreds of products including the most powerful anti-biotics known to man that can kill these new superbugs in the oil that can be extracted from the seeds ebing one product of high value as an example. No need for this THC smoking stuff and those who want to smoke it can do their own thing and leave those who want to make a decent life for themselves and their families to get on with it. I think growing non THC hemp is a damn sight better industry than maize when it comes to return per acre and not so hard on the soil. Beside it require less fertiliser and sprays etc to grow hemp thus its environmentally friendly. I bet crime will drop right off the charts when this happens and this is one reason why the cops would oppose such a venture even it its to lower crime and to help the long term unemployed in the North. They mostly Maoris after all and $500 Million per annum to police cannabis is big bucks in anyone’s terms and I bet a heck of a lot more than all the cannabis growers per year make combined. Pure hypocracy aye people. Finger crossed my Ngapuhi brothers for who know maybe JC will give us a nudge towards the positive for a change. GOD Bless you All.
i think the capitalist view has proven itself time and time again in this modern world – that it is simply no longer viable; maori in the north need to consider how to utilise their land to get whats best for whanau, which i think begins with food water and a sense of happiness. there is no way we can battle competition from large corporations as most have their sights set on eating up resources to feed this incredible appetite to devour anything and everything…CF should just rack off and find another avenue to fix his governments deficit problem. it will be far more doable to feed water and enjoy whanau than to pay back loans to develop land that can already give us what we need to live. in the years to come there will be no more land in the world because multinationals would have bought most of it (for gold and silver), raped it of its natural resources and dumped it as useless (when its done)…so whanau keep your whenua free from the global monster (govts included) cos it will kill off what will feed your mokopuna in the years to come – just saying!!
