Te Kohanga Reo National Trust Board hopes the new independent advisor Sir Michael Cullen will work quickly to implement changes to kohanga reo.
The former Labour deputy prime minister will work with the Crown and the board to carry out recommendations of the Waitangi Tribunal’s report on kohanga reo.
The inquiry issued five recommendations, including that the Government apologise for severe prejudice to kohanga by successive governments.
Trust board co-chair Tina Olsen-Ratana hopes Sir Michael brings integrity, honesty and neutrality to his work.
She said urgency is needed because kohanga whanau are still struggling under early childhood education policies.
The trust board expects to meet with Sir Michael in the coming weeks.
