Ngai Tuhoe to initial Deed of Settlement

Ngai Tuhoe is due to initial a multimillion-dollar Deed of Settlement at Parliament on Friday.

Tuhoe and the Crown reached an agreement in September 2012 on a package, which includes a Crown apology and an acknowledgement of Treaty of Waitangi breaches.

It also involves redress worth about $170 million, which includes its part of the Kaingaroa Forest near Rotorua.

The settlement will lead to the creation of legislation placing Te Urewera National Park under a new Governance Board, which will have an equal number of Tuhoe and Crown representatives.

The ceremony is due to get underway at Parliament from 11am.

Once the document is initialled, it will be taken back to the people for ratification.
