Travel Advisory: United States of America

Current for: 21st Century
Issued: 31 July 2000

The situation in the United States of America is unstable. Incidents of murder, armed robbery and other acts of violence remain at extremely high levels. The security situation and the outlook remain uncertain and is prone to deteriorate quickly in most cities in the USA. There is an ongoing high level of risk to personal safety and security.

Law enforcement, and the protection of life and property, remains patchy at best, with many law enforcement agencies overwhelmed by the incidence of violence and other crime.

New Zealanders are advised not to travel to the United States of America.

The Republic of Fiji continues to have a comparitively low incidence of violence and crime and is highly recommended by maorinews.com as an alternative holiday venue. Fiji remains one of the friendliest and most stress-free holiday venues on Earth.

New Zealanders remaining in the USA do so at their own risk and should maintain a very high level of personal security awareness bearing in mind the unpredictable nature of threats to citizens and foreigners alike. Tourists should be particularly wary about walking outside their hotels. All New Zealanders in the USA should have plans in place to leave USA by their own means.

New Zealanders in the USA are strongly advised to register with the Embassy in Washington if they have not already done so.
