Experience
Nearly forty years experience of research, analysis and report and submission writing, thirteen years as a commentator on contemporary issues, and web writing for six years. A sometime amateur poet and an entertaining public speaker.
I spent twenty years in the New Zealand Army with service in New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and Fiji, including active service in Borneo and Vietnam. A specialist in South East Asian and Pacific geopolitical issues, and defence issues.
Worked for a further eighteen years in Maori development, and in the wider field of community development, covering education, training, the arts, economic and business development, and information and communications technology. A leader in the fledgling Community Networking movement in Aotearoa New Zealand, that seeks to harness ICT to the service of communities.
Ten years in educational governance roles including two secondary schools, a Maori tertiary and degree level performing arts institution, the NZ Drama School, the NZ School of Dance, Te Kohanga Reo language nests, and several private training establishments.
A pioneer in the Maori Internet presence, created the first Maori website, "from Hawaiki to Hawaiki", and established the Maori Internet Society.
Writer and publisher of "Te Putatara, a newsletter for the kumara vine" since 1988, a very popular newsletter (now webzine) of news, views and comment for the Maori community.
Publisher of "Te Karere Ipurangi, Maori News Online", an internet portal to Maori and indigenous news and information.
